Albany, Halloween, New York, 1938. Francis Phelan and Helen Archer have been bumsback in their own birth city. She was a singer on the radio, he a major league pitcher. Death encircles them a pal has cancer, so he digs graves at the cemetery and visits to the grave of his baby child whom he dropped. Visions of his past haunt himincluding ghosts of two men he killed. Out drinking, Helen attempts to sing in a pub. Fran meets a grandson also visits his spouse and kiddies. He could stay, but decides it isn't due to him personally. Helen has their things and also locates a hotel. Amidst dereliction and their mistakes, the film explores their code of loyalty and fairness.
