After the death of his wife, Thomas Jefferson takes the position of US ambassador to pre-revolutionary France, however he struggles to adjust to life in a society where the aristocracy subjugates an increasingly restless peasantry. In Paris, he falls in love with intellectual artist Maria Cosway, but his attentions are diverted when his daughter visits from Virginia, accompanied by her gorgeous slave, Sally Hemings.
