Brilliant scientist Sarah, a doctorate student at Columbia University, is only weeks from from moving to Ohio with her very married lover when her mother dies unexpectedly, leaving Sarah the proprietor of a small but beloved Christian bookstore in the Bronx. Tasked with preparing a culturally appropriate burial for the family matriarch, Sarah must balance the demands of her beloved yet demanding family while managing the arrival of her estranged father and deciding what to do with the bookstore. Sarah faces her new obligations while figuring out how to be true to herself, with the help of an only-in-New York ensemble of Eastern European neighbors, fierce African aunties, and a no-nonsense ex-con coworker.
