Jack McKee and Cecil Colson are two foolish drifters who survive in the Montana wilderness by robbing cattle from other people's herds. Jack is from a wealthy family but left them because he despised their opulent lifestyles, and Cecil is a Native American half-breed who is seeking his own path in life apart from his father. Both hustle and rustle their way through the world, preying on the livestock owned by wealthy rancher John Brown. John hires ranch employees Burt and Curt to track out the cattle rustlers, frustrated that someone is killing his livestock. When Brown realizes he cannot trust his two useless ranch employees, he goes to the grizzled former rustler Henry Beige for assistance in locating the cattle thieves, while Jack and Cecil remain one step ahead of them, unaware that their good fortune will run out eventually.
